Donald F.
Urban
Dec 1, 1941 — Jan 17, 2026
Donald Frank Urban, age 84, was born on December 1, 1941, in Weinhart, Texas, to Marion and Frank Urban, and passed away peacefully at home on January 17, 2026, surrounded by family.
After graduating from Haskell High School in 1960, Don proudly served in the United States Army, exemplifying a lifelong sense of duty, honor, and loyalty to his country. Following his honorable discharge in 1965, Don moved to Carrizo Springs and briefly worked for Continental Oil before partnering in the electrical industry. Soon after, he founded Urban Electrical Services, Inc, a business he built from the ground up through hard work, integrity, and determination. He expanded the business into the utility industry and worked for many electrical cooperatives and investor-owned utility companies across the great state of Texas. Along the way, he built lasting generational friendships and earned a reputation that left a meaningful and lasting impact on the industry.
Deeply civic-minded, Don devoted much of his life to public service. On January 1, 1981, he was sworn in as Dimmit County Commissioner for Precinct 1 and served until his final Commissioners Court meeting on December 28, 1992. Prior to his service as commissioner, he was elected to the Carrizo Springs City Council and appointed Mayor. Don was also an active member of the Carrizo Springs Noon Lions Club and was especially dedicated to maintaining the baseball facilities at Lions Park for the Carrizo Springs Little League. In recognition of his service to the community, he was honored by the Dimmit County Chamber of Commerce as Carrizo Springs Man of the Year in 1988.
A man of strong faith, Don had a deep love for Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, where he was a devoted and active member for many years, including service on the vestry.
Don's life was defined by grit, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to others. He touched countless lives with his wisdom, leadership, and care. Don was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, and spending time on the family ranch. Countless memories were made by those who shared a hunt with him, moments filled with stories, laughter, and a deep appreciation for the land he cherished.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Ilean Willems Urban, whom he married on September 1, 1968, his lifelong partner with whom he built an incredible family and a beautiful life grounded in love and devotion; his daughter, Kristin Urban Kemmett, her husband Bryan, and their daughters Georgia and Greer; his son, Donald Courtland Urban, his wife Brooke, and their children Macie, Mellie, and Cooper; and his sister, Paula Sue Hodgkins. Don cherished his family above all else, finding his greatest joy in the laughter, love, and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.
Don will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him for his quiet strength, unwavering principles, and thoughtful guidance. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Michelle for her devoted care, kindness, and compassion.
