Edwyna passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas, leaving behind a tapestry of cherished memories and a profound impact on those whose lives she touched. Born to Edward Christler Crews and Mary Amanda (Dolly) Faulkner Crews on September 19, 1935, in Carrizo Springs, Texas, Edwyna was the second of three children. Her formative years were spent in Childress, Texas, where she actively contributed to her family's commercial dairy and chicken farms, instilling in her a strong work ethic and unwavering determination.
During her time at Childress High School, Edwyna excelled in various pursuits, showcasing her musical talents by playing the saxophone, competing in the jazz band, and leading as drum major. Her vibrant spirit and amiable nature earned her the distinction of being selected as a class favorite each year. Upon graduating in 1954, she embarked on her academic journey at Texas Tech University, focusing on a business major.
Fate intervened on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1955, when Edwyna met Frank Rutledge, thanks to a neighbor's thoughtful introduction. This introduction blossomed into a wonderful union when they married on July 29, 1956. The couple was blessed with two children, Donald, born in 1957, and Cynthia, born in 1960.
Edwyna's commitment to education led her to complete a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Texas Tech University. Her professional journey spanned the fields of education and accounting, where she imparted knowledge as a teacher, meticulously managed finances as a bookkeeper, and ensured financial integrity as an internal bank auditor.
Throughout their 67-year marriage, Edwyna and Frank were steadfast partners, exemplifying unwavering dedication and love. She was not only a devoted wife and mother but also an exceptional cook and a loyal friend. Her altruistic nature shone through her active involvement in the church and volunteering for local organizations.
Edwyna was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her beloved husband, two brothers, George Martin Crews and John Russell Crews, her children, Donald (Sancho) Rutledge, III, and Cynthia Ferguson, and her four cherished grandchildren, Hayley, Gray, & Bryce Rutledge, and McKayla Ferguson.
Edwyna embodied kindness and held a genuine belief in the inherent goodness of others. Her steadfast commitment to excellence and advocacy for education inspired all who knew her. In honoring her life and legacy, the family kindly requests that those wishing to pay tribute consider donating in her name to a charity of their choice or to the Miss Tristian Foundation (https://misstristan.com/) or Carrizo Springs Charities, Inc.
